Bio
Shanta M. Smith, EdD, is an Associate Professor of Clinical Education. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a Master of Science in Education from the University of New Haven, a Sixth-Year Diploma in Educational Leadership from Southern Connecticut State University, and a Doctor of Education in Educational and Organizational Leadership from the University of Pennsylvania.
Prior to joining USC Rossier, Dr. Smith had a distinguished 22-year career in public education. She served as principal of two STEAM magnet schools and held roles as assistant principal, mathematics instructional coach, and classroom teacher in both elementary and middle school settings. Across these roles, she consistently implemented student-centered instructional practices and mindful leadership approaches that honored the lived experiences of students, families, and staff—resulting in improved student outcomes and schoolwide transformation.
Dr. Smith’s scholarly interests center on fostering student agency through STEAM education and advancing self-care as a form of professional learning for educators. She has authored articles on educator well-being in academic journals, magazines, and newspapers and has presented nationally on identity-based radical self-care in education.
In addition to her academic work, Dr. Smith is a certified Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Facilitator through Breathe For Change, a trained yoga instructor, and a dedicated meditation practitioner—integrating wellness and holistic leadership into her teaching and scholarship.
